I didn't breastfeed in front of anyone except my husband until I was sure I had the hang of it. There's nothing like feeling awkward because you aren't used to the new "skill" of getting a baby latched to your breast yet, and it really is a skill to be learned.
The first time I breastfed in front of anyone else was at a La Leche League meeting. I was embarrassed even there at first, but I was able to latch her on without any difficulties and without anyone "seeing" anything. It turned out to be a great place to practice since the only people there are other breastfeeding women and small children. They can give suggestions on how to latch discreetly and feedback for you personally. It is comfortable since everyone there is in the same situation. I eventually got to where I felt comfortable breastfeeding anywhere I was, and never had problems with public breastfeeding.

Mm, a year ago, I found out my mom had cancer. My husband and I were (and still are, but not for much longer!) stationed in Germany. At that time, the doctors had just found that my husband had a heart condition, and they were doing a bunch of tests to make sure it wasn't fatal. So, I had a choice: Did I stay in Germany with my sick and possibly dying husband, or did I get on a plane and go back to the States to be with my sick and possibly dying mother?
It was a choice I had to make on my own, though I did pray about it. I didn't ask people what they would do, because I don't know of anyone who knows what they would do if they were faced with the same situation. They may *think* they know, but they don't. My mom was in a similar situation when my dad had his second heart attack and her mom was diagnosed with cancer though, and she chose to stay with her husband until the last moment. I made the same decision, because although I love my mom, I could never have forgiven myself if my husband died while I was with my mom, and it turned out that the cancer was treatable. I didn't go to be with my mom until we found out the cancer was terminal.
It was hard. Very hard. Most people don't have to face such a choice ever, or at least not until they're in their 30s or 40s. I was 28.
In some ways, I regret it. If I had gone back sooner, I would have had more than three weeks with my mom. That was so little time. But then, I didn't know at that time that my husband's condition was not fatal, and could I really have left him over here for three months, alone? Three weeks was bad enough without him by my side. I did what I felt I had to do, and I'm the one that has to live with it.
